Legacy Series Avionics Upgrade

Aerocorp Avionic Solutions Inc out of Calgary, Alberta is in the final stages of STC approval for the Garmin G950 in the DHC-6-300 Aircraft. The prototype aircraft is serial # 766 which is to be delivered to PT Air Born Indonesia on lease from Unity Aviation Ltd. The installation includes interface to the STEC 65 autopilot as well as CVR, HF, ADF, DME, Rad Alt. The G950 is basically a Garmin G1000 system without the Autopilot.

Information Required

While working on the airframe history for MSN 610 for TwinOtterWorld, I've encountered a bit of a timeline issue that needs to be clarified. If any readers can shed any light on the subject, it would be greatly appreciated!

MSN 610 was operated by Milne Bay Air in Papua New Guinea circa 1994 as P2-MBT, before going to Goroka Air Services in 1997 as P2-MRN. Reports indicate that by early 2001 it was being operated by Sabang Merauke Air Charter (SMAC) of Merauke, Indonesia as PK-ZAP and was involved in a runway excursion incident at Ninia, Indonesia 02-Feb-2001. From there reports seem to indicate that it was then operated by Asmat Air. By 2004 it was noted in a dismantled state "with a colourful tail" inside the Air Regional hangar at Madang, PNG. The undated pictures below show the aircraft at Madang, PNG. It would appear that by the strapping still around the fuselage it had been placed in its current location by a) a crane, or b) via helicopter sling load. The description above of a "colourful tail" match the photographs - so it is presumably in 2003 or 2004.

What is causing the problem is that the colours on the aircraft in the photographs doesn't tie up with the timeline of an accident that occurred in 2001. We know that PK-ZAP flew for quite some time in the basic Goroka Air Services scheme while operated by Asmat Air (who had a common owner with Air Regional) - so it probably didn't carry the pictured scheme until maybe 2002/2003.

Questions:

1) When did Goroka Air Services cease operations?

2) Was the aircraft ever actually operated by Sabang Merauke Air Charter?

3) Did the accident reported on 02-Feb-2001 actually occur?

4) What are the circumstances that caused the damage in the pictures above?

5) Last report of the aircraft is 2004 - where it this airframe currently, and what is the status?

Following this, it will be delivered to the United Arab Emirates. The registration N400GZ has not formally appeared on the FAA system as of today, however it does remain as a reservation to Ground Zero Solutions of Alexandria, VA who facilitate trade with the U.A.E. They handled the transaction for the first Series 400 delivery, MSN 876.

Nose gear failed after runway excursion on landing at Anadyr-Ugolny 05-Feb-2014 following a scheduled service from Cross Bay (Zaliv Kresta), Chukotka. The aircraft appears to have sustained fairly typical station 60 damage, as can be seen in the photo below. There were no injuries to the nine on board.

RUAG Completes DHC-6 Twin Otter Re-Life Project

Emmen, Switzerland, 10 February 2014. A 33 year old DHC-6 Twin Otter has received a new lease on life, following a comprehensive overhaul and upgrade project completed by RUAG Aviation at their facility in Bern-Belp, Switzerland. The re-life project was performed on behalf of Blue Bird Aviation Yemen, which owns the DHC-6 Twin Otter 7O-ADI MSN 664 and approached RUAG Aviation following successful experiences with engine and component overhauls.

Corrosion repairs were carried out on the wings, improving the aircraft’s safety and lifespan, and enabling the customer to avoid the unnecessary costs and downtime of complete wing replacements. The re-life programme extends the wing’s use for a further 33,000 flight hours. To further improve the Twin Otter’s life cycle, the cockpit of the 33 year old aircraft was fully modernised. Garmin 650/750 touchscreen navigation displays were integrated by RUAG Aviation, along with an Aspen 1000 avionics suite that incorporates an autopilot system and a new weather radar. “The upgrades and modifications performed by RUAG Aviation have effectively made a new aircraft out of the Twin Otter 7O-ADI MSN 664,” says Simon Hafele, General Manager of RUAG Aviation’s Bern/Belp facility. “With the aircraft’s new modern avionics and the re-life STC of its wings, the customer can confidently continue operating their Twin Otter for many more years to come.”

The entire avionics engineering, manufacturing of cable looms, installations and final testing involved in the re-life programme were completed by RUAG Aviation.

Viking Sells First Series 400 Twin Otters to Japanese Market

Singapore, February 12th, 2014: Viking Air Limited of Victoria, BC, Canada and First Flying Co., Ltd. of Osaka, Japan, have entered into an agreement for the purchase of two Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft, making First Flying the premiere Twin Otter Series 400 customer in the country.

The two aircraft, scheduled for delivery starting in early 2015, will be configured as standard 19-passenger commercial landplanes and put into operation as domestic carriers based in Okinawa and operated throughout the Ryukyu Islands in the southernmost region of Japan. “We are pleased to add First Flying to our growing list of international customers, not only as a new member of the Series 400 family, but as a leader in opening up the Japanese market,”
commented David Curtis, Viking president & CEO. He continued, “We are confident that the aircraft will be well received in this new market, and First Flying will be successful in introducing the Twin Otter Series 400 to Japan.”
Masanobu Nishikawa, First Flying president, stated “We are very happy to be bringing the Twin Otter Series 400 back to Japan again, as it has been approximately eight years since the last Series 300 Twin Otter retired from the Japanese sky.” He added, “Our company has put forward considerable effort to maintain the routes among the Ryuku Islands in Okinawa, and the addition of our new Series 400 aircraft will enable us to develop new routes and bring

First Flying Co., Ltd. is a regional air carrier and flying club based at Yao Airport, in Osaka, and operates a mixed fleet of fixed wing and rotary aircraft for flightseeing, aerial survey and flight training services between Yao Airport and Hiroshima-Heliport.

Viking Adds Two Series 400 Twin Otters to Singapore Airshow Sales Total

CAVU Aviation Finance Becomes Largest Twin Otter Series 400 Customer to Date

Singapore, February 14th, 2014: With the bustling 2014 Singapore Airshow show well underway, Viking Air Limited of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, was able to capture another multiple aircraft sale of the Twin Otter Series 400, adding to an order book nearing 100 aircraft sold. CAVU Aviation Finance LLC, of Palm Beach, Florida, USA, met with Viking late on Wednesday afternoon to sign a contract for another two Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft, adding to their current aircraft order list.

The additional two Series 400 brings the CAVU order tally (through its subsidiary Loch Ard Otters LLC) to fourteen aircraft since program launch, making CAVU the largest Viking Twin Otter customer to date. CAVU has already taken delivery of their first six aircraft, helping to launch the Twin Otter Series 400 in Papua New Guinea, Tahiti, Turkey, Bangladesh, and the United Arab Emirates.

“Loch Ard was one of the original launch customers for the Series 400 Twin Otter program, and has returned to Viking on more than one occasion to increase their aircraft orders,” commented David Curtis, Viking president & CEO. “We greatly appreciate the customer loyalty Loch Ard has developed with Viking, and their continued confidence in the Series 400 Twin Otter.”

Sadly it appears we have another in a long line of Twin Otter losses in the challenging operating environment of Nepal.

Royal Nepal's 9N-ABB has crashed in the forest in the Argakhanchi district after departure from Pokhara 16-Feb-2014. . The wreckage was located on 17-Feb-2014 near the village of Masine Lek, and it has been confirmed that there were 18 fatalities. The crash occurred at the 7,000 ft level, and wreckage was found over an area of approximately 7 kilometers. The aircraft was en route from Kathmandu to Jumla, with a stop in Pokhara, and carried a crew of 3, and 15 passengers.

Montrose Global LLP to Purchase Five Viking Series 400 Twin Otters

Farnborough, England, July 14th, 2014: Viking Air Limited of Victoria, British Columbia, and Montrose Global LLP of London, England, have signed a proposal for the purchase of five Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft, making Montrose the first customer for the type in the United Kingdom.

The deal for the five Twin Otter Series 400, to be offered by Montrose to airlines on an operating lease basis, is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks. The aircraft will be offered in a variety of configurations, including amphibious float provisions, and are scheduled for delivery starting in late 2015 through 2016.

“Global demand for the Twin Otter continues to be robust, attracting an increasing level of interest from the aircraft leasing community who recognize the outstanding value proposition of an aircraft with worldwide market acceptance,” said Richard Libby, Viking Director of Aircraft Sales. He added, “The Twin Otter has a long history of exceptionally strong residual value and worldwide market acceptance, making it an ideal asset to offer on operating leases. Final Two DHC-6-400 Guardians Completed

Ikhana has also completed modifications on the final pair of Viking Air-built DHC-6-400 Guardian maritime patrol and utility aircraft that are poised for delivery to the Vietnam Navy, marking the completion of the service’s first fleet of fixed-wing aircraft. The six Guardians are the first Western-made aircraft to be operated by the Vietnamese military and have been assigned to Air Force-Naval Brigade 954, with three configured for maritime patrol and three equipped for utility, VIP and transport missions.

Under the Vietnam Guardian program, Ikhana completed integration of a chin-mounted Elta search radar system with an electro-optical/infrared sensor suite. The interior was also modified with an operator console with an adjustable operator seat, observation "bubble" windows, lavatory and galley, as well as utility seats. The aircraft, which are operating in a mix of float- and wheel-equipped configurations, are also provisioned with Ikhana’s recently developed 14,000-lb. increased-payload capability package.

Ikhana Twin Otter X2 Nears Completion

Although Canadian company Viking Air restarted production of the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter in 2007, demand remains high for refurbished and modernized versions of the original versions, of which more than 500 are still in service.

In response, California-based engineering, repair and modification specialist Ikhana is close to completing the first Twin Otter X2, a virtually new build aircraft that combines several “re-life” modifications for wings, nacelles, flight controls and the fuselage into a single package. Based on supplemental type certificates originally developed by Ikhana’s predecessor company R. W. Martin, the modification also includes new electrical wiring, customized avionics, a new interior and new engines.

Of the original airframe, only some of the skins and frames remain, while all other fatigue-limited parts are replaced with new parts that in some cases, such as wing skin doublers around the engine exhausts, are beefier than the original. Taken individually, the re-life wingbox provides DHC-6-100/200 operators with new limits of 49,000 hours and 98,000 cycles, while the upgraded -300 wing life is 45,000 hours and 90,000 cycles. Fuselage, nacelle and flight controls life are similarly returned to the aircraft’s original design limits.

“I thought about re-lifing the whole aircraft in the late 1990s but the bulk of aircraft had not reached that level,” says Ikhana president and CEO John Zublin. “Then they began to time-out and now we’re seeing many more aircraft starting to reach that point.” Ikhana, which has been buying up old fuselages, will sell the Twin Otter X2 at a flat rate of “roughly one-third less than a new -400,” says Zublin.

Air Seychelles Officially Welcomes two new Viking Series 400 Twin Otters

James Michel, President of the Republic of Seychelles, today welcomed Air Seychelles' two new DHC-6 Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft at a special ceremony at Seychelles International Airport.

The aircraft, recently delivered from Canada's Viking Air Limited, will operate between Seychelles International Airport and Praslin, as well as other islands in the archipelago, including Bird, Denis and Frégate.

Greeted by a traditional water cannon salute, the two aircraft, named 'Isle of Bird' and 'Isle of La Digue' respectively, arrived in sequence this afternoon in front of the Air Seychelles VIP lounge.

President Michel cut a ceremonial ribbon to welcome the Twin Otters to their new home, and was accompanied by Danny Faure, Vice President of the Republic of Seychelles, Joël Morgan, Seychelles Minister for Home Affairs and Transport and Air Seychelles Board Chairman and Manoj Papa, Chief Executive Officer of Air Seychelles.

Honouring tradition and representing the country's interfaith committee, the two aircraft were then blessed by Roman Catholic Priest David Alcindor and Anglican Priest Danny Elizabeth.

Cabinet ministers, government officials, diplomats, members of the National Assembly, representatives of tourism bodies, media and Air Seychelles staff were also present, including Captain Sandy Benoiton, Air Seychelles Chief Pilot for Domestic Services, and Captain Eddy Cesar.

Both pilots were part of the ferry crews that flew the aircraft from Victoria, British Columbia, and Farnborough, United Kingdom to Seychelles.

President Michel conveyed his thanks and appreciation to the Air Seychelles Board, management team and staff of the airline for successfully charting a new route for Air Seychelles, one which has turned the island carrier into one of the world's aviation turnaround success stories.

He said: "Today is a proud milestone in the history of Air Seychelles and on behalf of the people of Seychelles, I feel particularly proud of the Seychellois crew members and staff who have worked so hard and come so far to create a new and revitalised Air Seychelles. These two aircraft will no doubt brighten our skies as well as enhance our domestic services."

Minister Morgan said: "This is an incredible day, not just for Air Seychelles, but for the Seychelles. Our investment in new aircraft is a result of the success of our turnaround program and of our strong and rewarding partnership with Etihad Airways. Our new Twin Otters will secure the future of inter-island air services and boost Seychelles tourism."

The multi-million dollar fleet announcement for the purchase of three 19-seat DHC-6 Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft was made last October in a deal between the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles and Viking Air Limited. One remaining Twin Otter is scheduled for delivery in mid-2015.

Polynesian Airlines Announces the Acquisition of a third Twin Otter

Polynesian Airlines will take delivery of a Twin Otter aircraft in mid-August. The 16-seat aircraft from Canada will accommodate the growing demand for inter-island seats between the two Samoas.

The purchase, says Acting Prime Minister Fonotoe Pierre Lauofo will be financed with a $3 million tala loan. “Cabinet has approved for government to guarantee the loan from the Westpac Bank,” he said. “The Cabinet endorsement is based on the airlines’ profit-making record. Government of Scotland Secures Two Viking Series 400 Twin Otters

The Government of Scotland has announced the successful conclusion of the tender process to supply two Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft, for PSO (Public Service Obligation) routes from Glasgow to Barra, Tiree and Campbeltown.

Transport Minister Keith Brown indicated "The tender from Viking Air Limited offered the best value for taxpayers' money, as well as meeting all the requirements in terms of quality and delivery time"

The aircraft are expected to be delivered in May 2015. The routes are currently operated by Loganair, whose contract will come up for renewal next year. The Government of Scotland anticipates that by purchasing their own Viking Series 400 aircraft, there will be more competition in the contract renewal process for PSO routes.

Ikhana Aircraft Services DHC-6-200HG Endorsed by G-Sky Aviation

IKHANA Aircraft Services announced that G-Sky Aviation has recently completed one year of operation for its RWMI DHC-6-200HG first delivered in 2013. 

Bill Houghton, general manager of operations for G-Sky, states: “The aircraft has proven to be a great asset for our operation. The performance is greatly enhanced with the 620 horsepower engines and the payload is comparable to a DHC-6-300 series. The RWMI DHC-6-200HG holds FAA and Transport Canada supplemental type certificates (STCs), allowing operation of the aircraft to 12,500 pounds. The RWMI DHC-6-200HG STC increases the payload capabilities of the basic DHC-6-200 aircraft from 11,579 pounds (approximately 900 pounds, or nearly 8 percent, to 12,500 pounds). Operations are allowed to the full 620 shaft horsepower of its PT6A-27 engines effectively transforming the operation of a DHC-6-200 to match the capabilities of a DHC-6-300 aircraft.

Provincial Airlines (PAL Aerospace) Acquired by Exchange Income Corporation

Winnipeg, MB - 12-Nov-2014 Twin Otter operator Provincial Airlines has agreed to be acquired by Exchange Income Corporation, in a cash/stock deal valued at $246 million (CAD). The company operates five DHC-6-300 at its Innu Mikkun Airlines operation, a partnership with the First Nations of Labrador. The deal is expected to close by late 2014/early 2015.

Exchange Income Corporation already owns Canada's Bearskin Airlines, Calm Air, Custom Helicopters, Keewatin Air and Perimeter Airlines.

Fourth Twin Otter for Island Aviation Services Nears Completion

The next DHC-6 for Maldivian (Island Aviation Services dba) is currently nearing completion of work at the Ikhana Group facility in Murrieta-French Valley, CA. This will be their first Series 200 aircraft, joining two 300's in Male, and one 300 which is expected to arrive there tomorrow. C-FFNT had arrived at Ikhana on 27-Jul-2014 after it was acquired from Air Tindi by Vancouver-based Gravitas Aviation.

This will be the second time that MSN 226 has been flown in the Maldives, it was previously 8Q-HIB with Hummingbird from 1997 to 1999.
